The Luton and Dunstable University Hospital provide a full range of Acute Paediatric Services with dedicated facilities in a child and parent-friendly environment.

About our Service

Most children are seen within the Children’s Outpatient Department where the staff and surroundings are designed for the comfort and fun of children – and their siblings.

We have General Paediatric Consultants, each of whom have special areas of interest. They are complemented by Locum Consultants, which ensures there is hands-on Consultant cover 24 hours a day, every day.

Children admitted for Surgery

Parents of children who come into our Paediatric wards for surgery can rest assured that in addition to having the skills of a specialist surgeon, they will be constantly under the care of the dedicated Paediatric team.

Specialist Clinics

The Department has a wide range of Paediatric professional skills and runs regular specialist clinics.

In-patient Facilities

Our Paediatric Unit has 54 beds, including a 5-bed Paediatric Assessment Unit for children up to the age of 16 years. The comfortable, child-friendly environment with dedicated Nursery Nurses and specialist staff has a superbly-equipped playroom. There is also a schoolroom with a full-time teacher to ensure that our young patients have the opportunity to continue education whilst in hospital.

Supporting services include a Paediatric Physiotherapy team which has access to a start-of-the-art Children’s gymnasium.

Changing Places toilets

Changing Places toilets are larger accessible toilets for severely disabled people, with equipment such as hoists, curtains, adult-sized changing benches and space for carers. If you and your child need access to this space, it is located in Zone B/C and called the ‘Transport Room’. It is unlocked during the day, and if you require access outside of normal hours, a nurse will have a key to access.
